The Texas Department of Agriculture(TDA) slide collection is a visual record of the agency’s regulatory and marketingresponsibilities, which include monitoring and controlling destructive insects,plant diseases, and the sale and use of pesticides and herbicides; maintaining seedquality and the accuracy of commercial weights and measures; promoting Texasagricultural products in local, national and international markets; and supportingTexas agricultural development. The collection of color 35 mm slides, or filmtransparencies, and some 2 x 3 color negatives provides an in-depth portrait of thevariety in Texas agriculture, from its crops and produce to its livestock, poultryand aquaculture, as well as showing different aspects of rural and city life, Texasinfrastructure, and local businesses and manufacturing. The collection also showsthe TDA’s regulatory responsibilities for the safety of Texas farm workers, crops,produce, poultry, dairy and livestock for sale and export, monitoring destructivepests and pesticide use, promoting sustainable agriculture, and managingagricultural exchange programs. The collection covers 1966-1998, undated, bulk1980-1989.
